The Gniewino Municipality is relatively small, yet it is one of the most dynamically developing municipalities within the Gdańsk Metropolitan Area. At the same time, it serves as an important energy hub for the region. Notably, during the UEFA EURO 2012™ Championship, this is where the then-reigning European and World Champions in football - the Spanish national team - trained and stayed.

Gniewino is home to the largest pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant in Poland, as well as modern wind farms located across the municipality’s open landscapes. The modern sports complex centered around the “Mistral Sport” Hotel served as the training and accommodation base for the Spanish national team during UEFA EURO 2012™.

Within the municipality, there is a 30-hectare area belonging to the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone, established to ensure efficient use of existing infrastructure and to create new jobs. Investors operating there benefit from tax incentives. Key economic entities in the Gniewino Municipality include the Żarnowiec Hydroelectric Power Plant and the King Oscar fish processing plant, which produces approximately 35% of Poland’s canned fish output. Other important companies include RIELA, a manufacturer of agricultural machinery; AGRO-FISH, specializing in fish meal processing; the “FEDDE” carpentry workshop; and the “Śnieżka” dairy plant located in Perlino.

The surrounding areas of lakes and rivers are exceptionally attractive in terms of landscape, particularly Lake Żarnowieckie, considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the region. Due to its proximity to the power plant, the lake is not subject to a quiet zone, making it an ideal place for water sports such as jet skiing and motorboating, as well as for activities like paragliding in the surrounding area. The lake is also regularly stocked with fish.

Lake Żarnowieckie also functions as the lower reservoir for Poland’s largest pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant, commissioned in 1983, with its upper reservoir located in the village of Kolkowo. This area was also once planned as the site of Poland’s first nuclear power plant. The Żarnowiec Nuclear Power Plant was intended to consist of four units with a total capacity of approximately 1,600 MW. Construction took place between 1982 and 1990, but the project was ultimately never completed.

Among the cultural heritage attractions, the open-air museum in Nadole is particularly worth visiting, as it presents a traditional 19th-century Kashubian farmstead.

A completely new chapter in Gniewino’s history was opened by UEFA EURO 2012. Thanks to years of effort by local authorities and investments by local entrepreneurs, Gniewino gained the status of an official UEFA EURO 2012 Team Base Camp and was subsequently selected by the Spanish national team. “La Furia Roja” prepared here for their group matches, quarter-final, and semi-final. After the tournament, Gniewino was nicknamed by Spanish media “El Pueblo de la Furia” - a name reflecting the team’s strong connection to the place.
