The Lichnowy Municipality is divided into 10 sołectwa, each boasting its own traditions. The seat of the Lichnowy Municipality authorities is a large village of the same name. The municipality's lands are characterized by very fertile soils, hence the majority of its residents are engaged in agriculture, and its coat of arms features a full sheaf of grain and a mill.

The development of settlement in the Lichnowy Municipality dates back to the reign of the Teutonic Order. At the end of the 13th century, most of the large villages founded under Chełmno law, characterized by a high regularity of field layouts, were established in the area of the present Lichnowy Municipality. In more recent history - after World War II - immigrants from the eastern territories of Poland, as well as western Ukraine, began to arrive in the municipality. Former manorial estates and farms were transformed into State Agricultural Farms. Such a change in the management of substantial agricultural estates caused far-reaching spatial transformations and functional changes to certain facilities.

Considering the agricultural character of the municipality (agricultural land accounts for as much as 87% of its area), individual farms form its foundation, occupying almost half of its surface. The most frequently cultivated crops are cereals, rapeseed, and sugar beets. Among animal products, the breeding of cattle and pigs dominates.

The road network within the municipality guarantees convenient connections with the localities of neighboring municipalities (Ostaszewo, Nowy Staw, Miłoradz, Malbork, and Tczew). The areas where the municipality is located are rich in historical monuments, primarily historic religious buildings dating back as far as the 13th century.

A part of the municipality is located in the Great Malbork Fenlands, covering the lands situated between the arms of the Vistula and Nogat rivers. The Vistula River Valley, where the municipality lies, has been recognized as an ecological corridor of international rank within the ECONET ecological network. In the national System of Protected Areas, it is designated as a protected landscape area. The marked "Nadwiślański" (Vistula) hiking trail also runs through the municipality, passing along the flood embankment of the Vistula River. Based on this route, one of the variants for an international bicycle path is currently being planned.

Many localities within the municipality possess unique and well-preserved architecture. The best-preserved include: Boręty, Pardenowo, Szymankowo, Lichnówki, Lisewo Malborskie, and Starynia. In addition to historic religious architecture and 18th-century fragments of fortifications in Lisewo Malborskie, examples of former manorial buildings can be found in most of them. The few arcaded houses and "Olęder-style" farmsteads - combining residential, livestock, and storage areas - are the heritage of the villages located in the Lichnowy Municipality. The village of Szymankowo deserves special attention, as its history is directly related to the tragic events of World War II. During the events of September 1939, railway workers from Szymankowo stopped a German armored train by redirecting it to a dead-end track. Thanks to this, the German attack was successfully delayed.
