Żukowo is located on one side within the picturesque Kashubian Lake District, and on the other, it forms part of the metropolitan center. Beautiful landscapes, the uniqueness of Kashubian culture, and traditional Kashubian embroidery - these are the characteristic features of this 800-year-old town. Currently, thanks to the entrepreneurship of its residents and its immediate proximity to the City of Gdańsk, Żukowo is going through a dynamic period of development.
Żukowo can boast a rich history. The founding date of the town is considered to be 1212, when the funding for the construction of a Norbertine convent by the Pomeranian Duke Mestwin I was documented. It was here that a tradition of special significance for Kashubian culture was born. The Norbertine sisters created the design of the Żukowo school of Kashubian embroidery, which is characterized by a certain restraint in the choice of colors and delicate shading - thus reflecting the austere life in the convent. Currently, this original, beautiful ornament is the hallmark of the Żukowo Municipality, and the town itself is promoted as the "cradle of Kashubian embroidery". Consequently, in Żukowo, you can visit numerous exhibitions and displays presenting traditional embroidery, which has also found its place in the town's coat of arms.
The municipality's location, in the immediate vicinity of Gdańsk, favors the dynamics of its socio-economic development and makes Żukowo a kind of gateway to the center of the Gdańsk Metropolis. This economically advantageous location, however, caused a lot of trouble for the residents of the municipality, for whom frequent traffic jams, especially in the center of Żukowo, were a major nuisance. The situation was improved by major road investments completed over the years: the completion of the W-Z Route (connecting the center of Gdańsk with the bypass), the construction of the Karczemki interchange (the largest road interchange in northern Poland), and the opening of the 18-kilometer Southern Bypass. More recently, the situation of the residents was vastly improved by the completion of the Metropolitan Bypass (OMT) at the end of 2025. This long-awaited investment, whose route was determined back in 2012, significantly develops the town economically and allows for quick and safe travel towards Warsaw or the Hel Peninsula.
The diverse terrain and picturesque rivers and lakes create a beautiful landscape across the municipality. Exceptional tourist attractions include the former Norbertine convent and church in Żukowo. Next to it, a historic monastery mill and bakery still operate today. Architecture enthusiasts will certainly be interested in the 17th-century St. John's Church and the 18th-century Baroque cemetery chapel. Within the municipality, the largest Volkswagen car gallery in Poland, located in the nearby village of Pępowo, is enjoying increasing popularity among visitors. Further away from the town, on the Słupina River, you can also explore the site of the beautiful historic railway bridge from 1927, which recently became part of a historical preservation and relocation project.
Żukowo creates excellent conditions for the development of entrepreneurship, especially for family businesses. The municipality maintains a constant reserve of fully serviced land intended for business development and residential construction. An additional advantage is the aforementioned transport accessibility. In 2009, Żukowo received the title "Fair Play Municipality - Certified Investment Location" - a distinction confirming the authorities' care for the interests of the local community and their commitment to creating the best possible conditions for economic and investment development.
